Facebook closes "Neighborhoods" app, the clone of "NextDoor"

Facebook neighborhood organization

Goal has confirmed the closure of its platform Neighborhoodsa clone of another platform, Nextdoor, which was created with the intention of connect neighboring communities that allows you to share local news and information via Facebook.

Neighborhoods tried to connect local communities of neighbors, with their own features and profiles and distinguish them from Facebook groups

It was a way to extend what many users were reaching through Facebook groups, but added special features such as specific profiles for group members (other than whoever maintains the same user on Facebook) or designating moderators who have the authority to review the posts and comments.

Although Meta initially invested resources in the development of Neighborhoods because of the first success of the platform, the evolution of the activity there seems to have changed the assessment. The conclusion they would have drawn in the social network is that it would be more profitable to continue promoting Facebook groups rather than disbanding such specialized uses through a differentiated platform.

The first Neighborhoods tests were conducted in 2020 in the Canadian city of Calgary to later expand its scope to other parts of Canada and the United States, connecting hundreds of local communities. Now wish Meta announce that Neighborhoods will no longer be available from October 1.

The local content recommendations have recently become increasingly interested in social networks, as evidenced by: Nearby, the TikTok option that improves the display of content published in user timelines by users from nearby areas. In this case, not to generate a stable community associated with a specific area, but to show users relevant content based on the area they are in.
